khlHowever various views have been advanced as to the origins of the system established

by Nizam al Mulk. Nizam al Mull< vezier ofthe 'saljuq gs Alp Arslan and Malikshah,

built several madrasas and. these institutions, the most famous of which was the

Nizamiya ofBagdad, are generally considered by islamic writers as the frrst madrasas of

islam.

The Madrasa has very important the role in the consolidation of the Saljuq

Epire and of Orthodoxy.

in point of fact the Sultan Alp Arslan gave permisson .and Nizam al Mulk gave

orders for colleges to be built in various parts ofthe Sultan's empire. He further ordaind.
that one tenth of the royal revenue allotted to him as vezier sholud be set aside for

expendittrre on the building.

,it is generally_ accepted that Nizam al Mull< was the frrst to see clearly the role
that should be assigned to the madras asystem in the stabilization of the Saljuq Empire

and orthodoxy, and in the spiritual and political struggle against the schismanic sects and

that he made the support of these schools an integral part of the policy of the Saljuq

Empire.

Briefly, modem scholarship generally, has likewise expressed the belief that

there were madrassas in Islam before the time ofNizam al Mull<.
